Guys. I've recently had this idea, the type of idea that usually goes away after a couple days and I realize how stupid it is. But this isn't going away and I'm considering going through with it.
That idea is... buying a Volkswagen... worse, a convertible. For some reason I fell in love with MKI Rabbits and then realized that I'll only keep the car for a summer probably, so after seeing some pictures of Rabbit Cabrios I want nothing else. Slammed surfmobile on 13 or 14x8's is all I want in my life. And they kept building cabrios on the MK1 platform until '92 I think, so they're easy to find.
it does look like a clean car, but i'm still not convinced it is worth 5k. The driver seat is squashed and i'm sure the rest of the interior isn't perfect. The engine looks to have a lot of the hoses and cables replaced, but it still a 16 yr old motor. Plus, its an Auto ... i just plain don't like old auto trans.
Word, I would never pay 5k for that. He's down to 3800 and I still wouldn't pay that much. The first thing I would do would be a manual swap.
There are other cars like this; http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4155928 floating around that are pretty sweet and I wouldn't feel as bad just dumping, putting wheels on, and cruising around in, but still not worth the 4k people are asking.
Keep an eye out for me! Even Mk1 hatches, if they're well done I'm interested.
a white cabrio is pretty homo. but if you slam it on some black widened steelies, full time surf rack on it, and some other little parts it could be a fun surf beach car.

I know, I know. It's incredibly not hetero. But for some reason, the image of one dumped on nice, 8J 13s or 14s with surfboards in tow has me wanting one. Plus they're cheap as hell, like only twice the price of one of those Nikkor's
we just picked up a white 92 cabby a few months back for 3200, it's in great shape with 55k (now about 56k) original miles on it, so definitely try to get it a bit cheaper....but kelly blue book still has it dancing around the 4k mark which is nice.
the cabby is the final frontier for MK1s, there are a few that have already started, but i think you'll see more and more cabbys and cabrios at shows that are done up and done right!
kate's will be all ready to go come the BlownEuroz GTG this year!!!!!
Oh no... in white, good mechanical condition, okay aesthetically... that's dangerous. Dumped on widened steelies and euro bumper or whatever its called and for less than $2k it'd be a fun little cruiser.
...dammit i sound like a 16 year old volkswagen kid.
I really don't know what's wrong with me.
I'd almost talked myself out of it and then i see cheap cars like that white one. I should probably just put money into cleaning up/installing the parts on my Subaru, but apparently i'm not smart enough for that.
I guess a first start would be to see if someone selling one locally would let you drive one. I've only been in one or two cabrios ever, and they're noisy and very sparse - not sure I could deal with that full time if thats your intention.

you're totally correct on the noise-they sound like boats--they should've made them rear engined to keep the noise in the back like their ancestors...but nothing beats the stereo blasting with the top down in spring, summer, and fall!
hah, in Regina, Saskatchewan. Were we closer I'd have said something.
Been so busy with everything we didn't even get to go ice racing this weekend, but oh well. I'll throw up a link here tomorrow at some point when the project goes live.
