Default This is a RailGun...

Let me share a little science project with you guys

This is a railgun:

The clear box is a capacitor bank; the power supply. It is like a battery; you charge it up over several seconds, then discharge it in an instant... Since Power = Energy / Time, you can produce enormous amounts of power if you can dump all that energy in an instant.
How much power? 360,000,000 Watts!

The power goes through the red cables into the green rectangle, which houses two copper rails parallel to each other (thus the name "RailGun"). As current (88,000 Amperes) flows through the rails, it creates a magnetic field. Between the rails is a small metallic projectile; as the electricity flows through it, it creates a magnetic field there too, which is perpendicular to the magnetic field of the rais.
So as the magnetic field of the projectile repels the field of the rails... The projectile is electromagnetically propelled forward:

That much electricity does other things too... It turns part of the projectie into a plasma... That's the shower of sparks you see when the gun fires. It also creates a massive Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP). That has precluded me from being able to chronograph the gun

Well, without further ado, here is a video I made of it today:

It is the future of weaponry; a gun that shoots using pure energy, with no propellants; the bullets are smaller, there is no danger of rounds exploding if the vehicle carrying it gets hit, it has much better range and accuracy since the velocity it shoots at is several times higher than a conventional weapon's.

The technology itself (Linear Electromagnetic Acceleration) is the underlying principle behind MagLev trains and other linear devices like those rollercoaster rides that shoot a train or an elevator off at high speed.

As far as me? I'm doing this because I can, and because I enjoy it.

You might want to fix that massive flash and EMP...

On the battle field there's going to be something a little telling about the direction of fire.

When you show you location and have 30 guys with AK's, mortars, RPG's, etc go "Oh look Larry, there they are" its gonna blow.

The other advantage of a railgun is that on the larger scale, there is no propellant needed. In layman's terms it can take the 3' long warhead and make it as effective and dangerous as a 90' ICBM. Not only does that make it much more portable and stealthy, it makes it absolutely devastating.

Here's a fun fact for you:

The Navy's latest release on their railgun shows the capability to shoot a round at 3.6 miles per second and can hit a five meter target at a range of 200 nautical miles(230 miles)...... in just under 80 seconds. Although it is a non-explosive projectile, it strikes with the force of a Tomahawk cruise missile(they also said it was the equivalent of hitting the target with a Ford Taurus @ 372mph[not sure how they figured that one out lol!]) The biggest advantage yet, is that the gun can be fired every 6 seconds and projectiles cost about $1000(vs nearly a million for each cruise missile).
