Default Picked up a true GEM!

Picked it up this evening... $1700

It's an '87 325e 5 spd with 230k on it. I am going to do the general maintenance stuff soon, and turn it into a daily driver for my mother who is going to commute ~65 miles one-way, and a Land Rover ain't gonna cut it in mileage

Well then this morning I went out to the car - drove her around to get a feel (Hadn't drove it last night) and man this thing feels TIGHT. The suspension is great for an '87 - it had to have been replaced at some point! So, still dreading having to do the timing belt, I was looking around for clues as to when it was done. This meant looking at the timing cover bolts, the gaskets/seals, seeing how old they were approximately. But everything looked relatively clean. I was puzzled. Then, I remembered saying, "Look at this sticker in the morning when it's light out." So I checked the label out, expecting it to be a "don't touch when running, hot" type bullshit. But I looked closer and, well...

Car has 230k, timing belt done at 211k.... YES! No timing belt replacement for me!!! This is awesome - it also means that my mom can get it inspected tomorrow and drive it to work on friday! Such a freaking sick find for $1700.

The only "issue" is that the tach/coolant/oil service lights don't work, and this is said to be due to a failed "SI Board" its a module in the gauge cluster - so I am ordering a brand new one (I don't feel like playing with used ones). $100 brand new... $1800 mint running E30... damn.

seems like you got a steal. I hope it stays that way and no unknown issues creep up on you. From the pics it looks like a great car.

Jon, although the belt is only 19K old, they should be replaced every 4 years or 50K which ever comes first. Me being **** retentive, I have done it every 3 years/40K. Especially if the car wasn't run at all, you might want to consider replacing it soon. If you're doing the water pump (which given your mom's use of the car isnt a bad idea), you should change the belt at the same time. Timing belts are one use only, once you pull it off, its supposed to be replaced. Tensioner wouldn't be a bad idea either.

She used to have E30s and really likes one - Mercedes? Haha nice joke. We have 4 BMWs in the family we're not going to buy a POS mercedes!

It's a great car - 28 mpg, nice and simple to maintain, great car!

Not a respray!!
