I put this together for another forum. Could be interesting here. Post yours!
I organize the AKA Rally, and have taken a pretty wide assortment of cars on each event.
Starting in 04, I flew the majority of the legs to get there ahead of everyone (bad idea, I missed out on all the fun!), but I hopped a ride in a friend's S2000 for a few legs. It was cramped! NYC to LA
2005, Philly to Key West was supposed to be done in my 2005 Subaru STi. Don't laugh, but I managed to destroy an intercooler hose only 1/4 mil form the starting line, and had to abandon ship right there. I limped the car at the airport, hopped a plane to the next stop, and completed the rally in Alicia's then 350Z. I did a mock run of the event in my e36 m3.
2006, Vegas to DC
I brought my tried and true e36 m3, which I should've taken on all of the previous events. It was a great car, and kept up with everything except the 996 gt3. I did manage to kill my alternator, and had to limp it from Kansas City to Indy where the only replacement alternator could be found, on 2 spare batteries and a quick charger that I used during gas stops.
Next came the Fall Rally, Bar Harbor to NYC. I did a mock run of the event in my e36 m3, during which I managed to crack a header at 155+ mph. It made a great sound but I was able to get it fixed the next morning. I did the actual event in my 380whp STi, which completed the event with only a minor exhaust leak! Mike Boost completed the event in my old e36 m3.
2007 was Salt Lake City to Atlantic City, NJ, and launched on the Bonneville Salt Flats with top-speed runs. I completed the event in my new m5, ironically an 00 in Avus Blue, same as Alex's Poliezi m5. Sadly, my Powerchip was reflashed by the dealer before the event, and I hit my stock limiter well within the 3 mile course on the salt. Regardless, the m5 proved to be the best rally car yet, as it was more than happy to cruise at 150+, was super comfortable, and had plenty of place to haul gear. The only problem I experienced was a thrown belt at 150+, which the dealer easily fixed. They also washed all of the salt from my car, and Durka's e46 - a nice bonus!
This m5 is the most heavily modified car that I've taken on a rally. It has:
Hamann Headers
Supersprint X-Pipe
Supersprint Magnum exhaust
Powerchip
AA Intake
Dinan Diff
01+ headlights & taillights
KW Coilovers
Euro Floating Rotors/Hawk Pads/Stainless Lines
Cargraphic Wheels (245/40, 285/30)
Eibach Swaybars
Alcantara Steering Wheel
01+ MKIV DVD nav
and the list goes on...
P.S. I like to spin tire. What was I thinking with AWD?
