Default My progression of rally cars...

I put this together for another forum. Could be interesting here. Post yours!

I organize the AKA Rally, and have taken a pretty wide assortment of cars on each event.

Starting in 04, I flew the majority of the legs to get there ahead of everyone (bad idea, I missed out on all the fun!), but I hopped a ride in a friend's S2000 for a few legs. It was cramped! NYC to LA

2005, Philly to Key West was supposed to be done in my 2005 Subaru STi. Don't laugh, but I managed to destroy an intercooler hose only 1/4 mil form the starting line, and had to abandon ship right there. I limped the car at the airport, hopped a plane to the next stop, and completed the rally in Alicia's then 350Z. I did a mock run of the event in my e36 m3.

2006, Vegas to DC

I brought my tried and true e36 m3, which I should've taken on all of the previous events. It was a great car, and kept up with everything except the 996 gt3. I did manage to kill my alternator, and had to limp it from Kansas City to Indy where the only replacement alternator could be found, on 2 spare batteries and a quick charger that I used during gas stops.

Next came the Fall Rally, Bar Harbor to NYC. I did a mock run of the event in my e36 m3, during which I managed to crack a header at 155+ mph. It made a great sound but I was able to get it fixed the next morning. I did the actual event in my 380whp STi, which completed the event with only a minor exhaust leak! Mike Boost completed the event in my old e36 m3.

2007 was Salt Lake City to Atlantic City, NJ, and launched on the Bonneville Salt Flats with top-speed runs. I completed the event in my new m5, ironically an 00 in Avus Blue, same as Alex's Poliezi m5. Sadly, my Powerchip was reflashed by the dealer before the event, and I hit my stock limiter well within the 3 mile course on the salt. Regardless, the m5 proved to be the best rally car yet, as it was more than happy to cruise at 150+, was super comfortable, and had plenty of place to haul gear. The only problem I experienced was a thrown belt at 150+, which the dealer easily fixed. They also washed all of the salt from my car, and Durka's e46 - a nice bonus!

This m5 is the most heavily modified car that I've taken on a rally. It has:

Hamann Headers
Supersprint X-Pipe
Supersprint Magnum exhaust
Powerchip
AA Intake
Dinan Diff
01+ headlights & taillights
KW Coilovers
Euro Floating Rotors/Hawk Pads/Stainless Lines
Cargraphic Wheels (245/40, 285/30)
Eibach Swaybars
Alcantara Steering Wheel
01+ MKIV DVD nav
and the list goes on...

P.S. I like to spin tire. What was I thinking with AWD?

Chris

Let's see here.....

'05

Survived the whole trip, though I didnt.

'06
Only made it for a few days, blew the cooling system to pieces but the elises, and R34 GTR can attest to it's speed

'06.5
350zTT MORE POWA, with EGT issues though which was resolved by a fantastic retune by Mike @ Innovative Tuning.

Car broke with electrical issues as I pulled into my parking spot at the last night of the rally.

'07 - e46 330i

Flawless other than the cracked flex plate, two broken rear springs, new headlight, new windshield, brakes, tires, tie rods, subframe bushings, and shocks.... hahahaha. Oh, and all 5 wheels bent, cracked or otherwise, but I suspect that had more to do with the accident involving two deer and a long ravine back in '04.

2005 philly to key west.

started in dan's mk4 gti with a big turbo kit (approx 280whp), turbo separated from the manifold and had no boost from about pittsburgh to louisville. we rigged it up for the trip down to georgia....atlanta used hose clamps to hold the turbo on the manifold and that actually worked pretty good. georgia to florida went smooth then i rode with ross in the caddy while dan visited some fat chick then i made it down to key west.

gti

caddy

2006.5 fall rally bar harbor to nyc.

i rode up to maine with alan in his bmw 525i then did the rally with durka in the twin turbo 350z. that car was fun as hell. it ripped the whole time then at the last stop outside nyc it had an electrical problem.

350z

2007 salt lake city to atlantic city.

flew out to las vegas... met with chris, alicia, durka, dan, and john. chris picked up the m5 the 330i was there with mike and john had the m3. then next day all of us at separate times drove up to salt lake city to start the rally. penthouse and 150mph in the 330i is all you need to know.

Let's see...
A week before the '04 rally my white 2004 STi was bone stock. Ordered parts and had it at stage II+ by the rally. Finished it while my dad was loading the car. The car did great with no issues.
-no tickets

A month before the '05 rally a faulty vivid racing/agency power fuel injector killed my engine. Trailered the car down to st. louis to have Axis do a quick build. Drove out to philly and stayed with Chris two nights prior to the rally. Got a tune from Turbo XS, it was horrible. Chris and I spent the night re-tuning the car. The car did great and never broke. After an incident with the police, the rear spoiler came off and went in the trunk.
- no tickets

For 2006 I brought my 400awhp 2004 WRB STi. It managed to get 6mpg and drink more alcohol than I did on the rally. By far the worst car to have brought, but it was fast and fun. It's only issue was a blown header/up-pipe gasket on the second to last day and it lost the a/c. Not to mention blowing a ringland halfway across the country. Kept driving the car for a few months blowing oil out the catch can.
- three tickets

For 2007 I was attempting to get the blue STi's new engine finished in time for the rally. Well, considering that the car hit the road for the first time tonight, it wasn't ready. So a few days before the rally I drove out to PA and picked up a 2000 Trans Am WS6 (aka Transmarobird) with 360rwhp. This was by far the best rally car yet. Over 25mpg while traveling well over 100mph, burnouts, annoy everyone that was behind me, and no cracked windshield. I sold the car two weeks after the rally.
- one ticket

2005 philly to key west.

Like PT said we started in my mk4 gti with a GT2871R (approx 280whp), turbo separated from the manifold and had no boost from about pittsburgh to louisville. we rigged it up for the trip down to georgia....atlanta used hose clamps to hold the turbo on the manifold and that actually worked pretty goodmelted the brake booster line and fixed with alum foil and a marks-a-lot marker. georgia to florida went smooth when PT rode with ross in the caddy while I visited some fat chick then limped down to key west after sitting all day at a shop getting the manifold fixed(broke 200 miles away).

gti

2006 Vegas to DC

Drove out with a friend in a brand new E60 M5 as well as Chris John and Brent had a decent time despite how many times he almost killed me because of complete inability to drive. Then after an argument he left me at the hotel on one of the legs.... Had to hitch rides from there on but I got to meet a bunch of other great people and ride in some cool cars(mooned people at 100+ in the lotus with Brent:-p)

2006.5 fall rally bar harbor to nyc.

Cruised up in my 1998 Dinan supercharged M3 with Art in his Z4M coupe that I picked up a week beforehand. Had an awesome time with John on that rally, beautiful roads.

2007 salt lake city to atlantic city.

Drove out with Durka Chris and John when my M3 had suspension issues right beforehand(tore the RTABS and couldn't get them done in time) then Ended up doing the rally with PT and Durka in the 330. Made a few bills at the casino on both sides of the states and spend the night in the penthouse. Holla!

330i

Only rally I missed was 04:-/
