Angry Just what are they Thinking...?

OK, now this has got to be going too far....

How can a public school system decide it has the right to invade your child’s privacy like this..? I can't believe they are getting away with this..

It's not much different then testing for drugs, either way it's still an illegal activity. I know I drank when I was younger, though not in high school. I would like to know if the D-bags my sister's hang out drink. You know, just another thing to hold against them.

I understand it is illegal to drink at that age. BUT that does not give a public school a right to do mandatory drug/drink testing on students (even if it is “random”).

A: They are kids and that right should be reserved by their parents. If the parents agree to this, that is fine. But if a parent says NO, then the school should not be allowed to require this testing for that student. I personally would hope most parents would refuse this invasive test on their kids.

B. I do not believe a PUBLIC school has the right to invade a student’s privacy in this manner. It is a public school, they cannot withhold your right to an education, or single you out, based on something you did off school grounds and outside of any school activity. That is just ridiculous. Yes, I know the article said they would not be punished, but their parents notified and put into a counseling program... WTF, that is still a punishment for something that in NO WAY directly affects what they do in school.

Big Brother is watching you all the time then. I guess if you get the kids used to this type of crap, they will be more willing to give up their rights as they get to be adults and the government can start regulating everything they do in their personal time… BullShit!

There is no justification for this, and I hope someone brings that up to the ACLU.

thats a bunch of bullshit, what kids do outside of school is their business. Its another thing if they bring the alcohol to school. they could just stay home for a few days so they didnt have to take the test.

Just for the record, I'm not for this. Just not against it either, I don't think kids should be drinking at that age. I never went to high school though, so maybe I was brought up differently.

This is actually fairly common. My Sophomore year in High School we were randomly given drug and alcohol tests at least once a week. Also, the police brought in "drug dogs" once every couple weeks to search vehicles. Empty beer cans, empty packs of cigarettes, diet pills, lighters or even a vehicle that smelled like pot would be an automatic suspension for 1-3 days. Maryann was suspended for having a pack of Trim Spa in the console of her car that year. It's total BS especially for a small farm town of 4k people where there isn't anything for teenagers to do except drinking on the weekends.

This is BS, I wouldnt let my kids take the test. Public schools are rediculous they have other problems they need to worry about than an occasional beer OFF school time.

I agree, the school is responsible to provide the best education the students can receive and the school environment is safe. What students do on their weekends is the parents responsibility.

If my kids were going to this school I would be having a fucking fit.

Parental responsibility FTW!!! As a high school student, I can say, many of my fellow classmates drink on the weekend, personally I don't ever, but it doesn't seem to affect them during the week, and we haven't had a car related death in over 10 years. So, this is BS.

I know kids who I went to highschool with who used to get piss drunk DURING school, and now their little brothers are doing the same thing in one of my little sisters' grades. So the problem is obviously there. Granted what is done off school property and not during school hours is absolutely NONE of their concern/business. I wonder how long these tests will last.

This school has good intentions, but a shitty idea.

Did anyone else see it on CNN tonight? They said that the test is soo sensitive it will mistake mouthwash, Hand Sanitizer and Vanilla Extract as alcohol that had been consumed. Students who fail the test will not be punished but will have their parents notified! WTF??!! The Public school system is really getting out of hand with this. Drug testing is one thing, but testing for alcohol is absolutely fucking ridiculous. Lets be honest here, who DIDNT drink alcohol when they were in high school???!!!!

I didn't go to high school, or drink alcohol during the time period I would have.
