Default Doing it on a bike - for RallyDuc

Hi RallyDuc,

How was it doing it on the bike? I'm thinking about doing it next year... Did you have to lug everything with you, or were you able to have someone else carry your stuff?

It was a 1996 916S. Not the friendliest of rides with race geometry & suspension, but I loved it! The bike wasn't as bad as everyone thought it would be. The dealers recommended service for the rally was to buy a 1098, but wheres the fun in that?

As far as luggage goes I had an AXIO tail bag which was way smaller than I anticipated. I had all of my tools & 40 oz spare gas in there. Wore a No Drag backpack with a change of clothes, camel back & assorted other stuff I'd need for as soon as I got to the hotel. Then managed to get everything into a small TUMI rolling bag which was crammed into one of the cars. Everyone was really cool with taking my bag for me. I didnt even wear most of my clothes because I was usually in leathers.

Hopefully next year there will be a dedicated camera equipment van/car/BUS for all of their stuff and bike luggage

Slower than usual pace and wet. Very wet. My chatterbox was only "water resistant" which killed it for the rest of the rally. I had the VW Rabbit escort the while way which was great. Those hours would have sucked if it was just me, but we got some great pics out of the whole ordeal

Sadly, 2008 was the year of the Volvo luggage car. Let's not do that again. haha

Hahaha, did you see the back seats of the Blue and Black M5's?

I'm probably bringing something with next to zero luggage space next year so I'm going to be bumming.

Honestly I didn't see what the other cars were carrying. I was too busy fending people off from my car. Vultures I say!

"Space, got any space?"
"Room for just one bag?"

lol

It's easy when you tape everything down in extremely convenient places!

Well shit does fly around the suede headlined cabin of a german saloon doing 180++ mph, so tape is a must in these situations.

Thanks RallyDuc. Sounds like Chatterbox is a no-go, and people may be nice enough to carry my stuff, but should still be prepared to carry everything on my own if needed.

More questions: Did you do anything to increase your fuel tank's capacity? Did you use a GPS or a radar detector? Did you service you bike at all during the rally or did you just bring a bottle of chain lube and a bike pump, ghetto style?

Have Chris talk to the Punishers. (Or I can for you) Ray has a trailer truck and driver that will be following the NER in 09 with luggage, spare tires and tools that people want to bring and don't have room for.

I'm sure he would be happy to work something out with you guys for the 09 AKA.

The Chatterbox was great though, until it died. I could hear all of the 2-way radio talk from the cars and got bluetooth cell phone calls and GPS updates.

I ran with the stock 4.6 Gallon tank with 1 gallon reserve. I had to stop every 150 - 200 miles or so which was good for a stretch and quick break before back on the road. Having saddle bags with auxiliary tanks for next year is sounding like the way to go so I won't need everyone to pull off with me. I used a Garmin Zumo 550 GPS unit with bluetooth. I have a RAM mount ball on my steering stem and was great for gas reminders, top speed and kept me on track. Could still be in full tuck and check how far I had to go too.

I had a laser star unit and a V1 but it was usually all off because I'd set off all the other cars radar every time I'd get in front of them. When you've got a Ferrari, GT-R, turbo Z & monster truck in front of you blazing a path, a single bike doesn't get that much attention.

I had the bike go for a complete service a day before the rally with new Diablo Corsa tires put on it. Ducatis need servicing every 3000 miles so I figured it should make it the whole way but had Ducati service centers along the way programmed into my GPS just in case. Made it the whole way without any service or major problems. My speedo cable broke the last day but GPS had a more accurate speed anyway.

You end up wearing leathers pretty much all the time. A change of pants, board shorts, long sleeve shirt, t-shirts, socks/underwear and different shoes are all I really needed. Oh and a pair of nice clothes for Vegas...
