As said before, experience your first rally, and then you will understand. This isn't just about driving from point "A" to "B". There is no way to put in words the things you experience. I would be here all night.
Like not knowing where your vette will turn up every morning after you parked it?
HAHAHA. The most commonly asked question. But for those who don't know and have never experienced a rally completely legitimate.
At $1250 per person for the trip including a hotel (NEVER has it been a "motel" and NEVER will it be unless under extenuating circumstances Im sure) dinner (no "silver diner's here), and events (take a pick from the list people have said and price it out). It seems like a lot but add up a nice vacation for you and your girl somewhere. $2500-$5000 is about right for 4-7days of fun, events, and most importantly the unforgettable memories. And thats NICE accommodations. It may be a "cheaper" rally by comparison but they do NOT go cheap on accommodations and "bang for your buck" so to speak.
Believe me....we ALL wish we could haggle Chris to get it cheaper. I've tried to see if it's cheaper on your own and it's just not unfortunately (estimated multiple trips after getting the full route info after the rally)

Sit down and add up the cost of a hotel every night, dinner at a different restuarant each night, throw in a couple club covers, add a track day rental, and 2 or 3 additional miscellaneous events (for example we have gone dune buggy racing, done the Bonneville salt flats with rented EMS and insurance, gone to the F1 races with paddock access, did Mid-Ohio Le mans, gone white water rafting), buy a full car vinyl package with a two-colour scheme, throw in extra random shit (participants in the past have recieved t-shirts, detailing product, broadband cards for example), buy extra insurance to cover the trip, add it all up for 2 people, and tell me how far off that figure you think it is?
I didn't include the cost of hanging out with a bunch of AMAZING people and making lifetime friends - that is priceless
The Dune buggy racing all day in the desert was probably one of the coolest things ever!!! We were launching those things like crazy then the crazy horse truck started tearing up the desert! What a day! Moab was incredible and hastings NE track day and parting it up with that BBQ and that guy who owned MPH was totally cool!!! How bout the drunk school bus on the track?!?!?! Never thought that washing your car in front of the hotel lobby at 230am in Salt lake city was cool until you do it yourself!!!! If you got $2500 and a reliable motor with wheels, do it! You'll have stories for a lifetime!!!! See you all in 2010!!!! 2008 was Unreal!!!!!
Just like LeeCee said....you'll meet some awesome peeps! Cheers Chris C & LeeCee to name a few!

No, I wish I had an extra $10 grand to give to Chris because he deserves it for all the bomb ass stuff he sets up and the work he puts into it...the whole rally is a steal and every one of us who has been on it knows it
I agree with Dan. A great deal for an awesome time you'll never forget. Also, much credit to Chris for the time taken to organize the rally. I'm really looking forward to 09'! And mustaches..very nice!
