Ummmm... Not that impressive. They took an off-the-shelf weather balloon, stuck an off-the-shelf camera on it, found it when it came down, and that's news somehow?

Well sorry if I sound like an arrogant prick, but a camera in a baloon just didn't seem that exciting? Hell I helped build a real satellite when I was at school, and I didn't think that was impressive? Maybe I am just not that excitable. My bad. At least I helped out with a source for the baloon and the gas instead of just cheering along without adding anything to the thread.
All panels were CNC machined by myself, along with the enclosures for most of the circuit boards. I also helped design the boom deployment.

I don't think these kids were trying to out-do NASA or anything like that. They did something cool with $150 and are planning on posting directions so anyone can do it. As far as I'm concerned anything that makes "space" more accessible to kids theses days is cool (impressive?) in my book. NASA is slowly dying and the only thing that will keep it going is the continued interest of the public. 10 years ago the idea of building a box with GPS tracking that automatically takes timed digital pictures of near-space was something far beyond what kids could do in their garage. If they can do it now, for $150, and that get's them into it, then that's very cool.
It's not a pissing match. Your satellite is very impressive, but I think the goal of the balloon experiment is very different. My point is, don't shit on someone elses' work just because you've been involved in something bigger. There is always something bigger, faster, cooler (with the exception of your Vette. As I understand it, that is as fast and as cool as it gets!).
Sad that you feel that way Powerlabs. I would think that any scientist would be able to appreciate a feat such as this.
Only the truly misguidely arrogant would dismiss it. I guess I can see how you might think that it is a slap in the face that they accomplished almost the same thing as you but with far less planning, money and arguably as much ingenuity.
Seriously. Good thing you weren't around on July 16, 1969. I'm sure they would have been disappointed to know you could have accomplished the same thing yourself with some duct tape and a bottle rocket.

I'm sorry, you guys are taking this way too harshly. Could you please explain to me where the "feat" is? If I buy a weather baloon online, take it to Wallmart and have them fill it with Helium, then swing by the photo department, pick up a camera, grab a cooler and some handwarmers on my way out, tie the baloon to the cooler with the camera inside, would you be impressed? I know it sounds really cool that they "went to outer space", but, in reality, "Any Scientist" (to borrow your words ) knows that almost every single Helium Baloon you let go is going to go AT LEAST as high as that one went, so it is really no big surprise that a camera tied to it shows what the earth looks like from 18KM up... The only impressive thing about this whole experiment, as far as I can tell, is that they actually found the camera, and that it didn't destroy anyone's property when it hit the ground going over 150 miles an hour.
BTW Satellites are usually intended to gather scientific data... Ours monitored Gamma Ray emission from outer space. That's not really the "same accomplishment" as a cooler that takes a few pictures from 18km up.
Hey, I'll tell you what. I have a Helium tank in my lab in New Brunswick, complete with regulator. If you guys decide you want to do this, the Helium is on me; just tell me when you need it.

I was referring to your OMG I CNC'D SHIT post. We don't care. All of your "stories" and "wisdom"? Yeah you come off as an ass or an idiot, take your pick.
You could have been in the oval office wearing a blue dress and I STILL wouldn't give a fuck about your "stories".
The original post is cool as hell.

This would be mildly disappointing if you mattered somehow.

That's what makes it impressive, They used off the shelf items, and they only spent $150. Where it took NASA Billions to get pictures like that. If this is such an easy task, why haven't other stories like this been published before.
Plabs, who cares on how you get VIP service were ever you go. That what you do is so much superior then anything else. Do us all a favor and quit trying to one up everybody and everything.. nobody gives a shit...
Its too bad the camera and cooler didn't land on your vette... oh wait do you even have it back after a little pothole destroyed the front end..

Speak for yourself. I heard plenty about what a moody little bitch and a rude asshole you where before, during and after the rally, before you go thinking everybody loves you.
I've publicly admitted I have my fair share of faults, especially on this years trip. I certainly know everyone doesn't love me, but the majority also don't loath me. Opposed to the common view towards you.
