I own a 1996 911 carrera and i am having trouble passing the inspection - the code i got was a P1691 - i tried cleaning out the carbon from the intake with seaform but the "check engine" light came on after running it for 200+ miles after resetting.

Help!!!!

well if its OBDII (96+ is) cant you just reset it right before you go in? they usually dont "sniff" obdii cars anyway

Strangely, on a Porsche that code seems to be a check engine light for your check engine light:

Porsche:MIL (Check Engine Light) No Signal / Control Module Fault EEPROM

Not sure which control module is bad... but certainly some piece of electronics needs to be replaced :(

Dan, on OBD2 cars the diagnostics need to all be run and in a ready state in order to pass the computer check.

In Maryland, we don't have to pass an annual inspection, only a bi-annual emissions test. If you fail the inspection and you can prove that the dollar value to fix the problem is more than a certain amount, you can get a waiver.

Do they do that where you live?
If so, I'm sure you can get a dealer to write up an astronomical estimate for you. Especially if it's problem not worth fixing. Like a faulty check engine light...

Couldn't you just reset it right before you went in? Or is it in a "pending" state not "ready" at that point

The ECM needs to be in a ready mod. After resetting a CEL it usually takes about 200 miles or so before ready status is achieved.

However, on the tuning software I run for my Subaru, I can flash "force ready mode" as well as turn off all the lights that are giving me CEL's! ahahahaha

Gotcha...i thought it was "ready" as soon as it was in closed loop...but that makes sense

Also in MD if your car is lowered they give you a 2 year extension. my gti on koni's is dumped and the place where they scan the obd2 is after the rollers in every single emissions shop around us... so they know your car wont make it over the rollers. lol and they dont care enough to have you pull in the exit on the other side. they just write you an extension.

i have been doing this since i dropped my car like 5 years ago. lol

GL with that.

yeah, I figured that out like 10 years ago. (yes, I am that old)

In fact, I have never taken a car through emmisions because I figured it out the first time I tried to take a car there.

It's not even an extension. It's a waiver and it's free. I really prefer MD DMV.
