View Full Version : Tina Lives! Engine is NOT blown

So as many of you know. I've recently been bemoaning the demise of my beloved Tina (my 996 Carerra 2).
Last Friday, I was in MD visiting the dear old sis when I decided to drive 2 miles down the street to get a hair cut.
I pulled out of her complex without issue, but a few yards down the road, my pesky heat shield squeak (of many months) turned to a rattle. Stupidly, I figured a slight tap of the accelerator might knock whatever came loose, off.
I blipped my throttle to maybe 5K and heard popping - kinda like hitting rev limiter, except I was nowhere near that. After that, the engine sounded like crap. Like it was misfiring badly and I could hear more rattling in higher rpms, and the car lost power upon trying to accelerate. Horrid, horrid noises! And then, while trying to get it on a flat bed, it started blwoing massive amounts of oil.
Anyways....the car got towed to Sarli Motorsports where the incomprable Ben is now taking care of Tina. I've been having nightmares all weekend about having to rebuild my motor or having to find a new one altogether. Sucks, cause Tina has been running like a champ lately.
Well I just got a call from Ben. Turns out a frigging spark plug shot out, hit the valve cover and disentegrated the plastic tubing that seals/connectes it to the engine (a plastic tube connected to the coil pack). The tube got sucked down into the engine. Yikes! Ben has been able to recover 80% of the pieces. He is waiting on a borescope to see if there is anything else big inside. He is hoping that the pieces left were small enough to be demolished by the chain etc. (I dunno, I'm quoting here) and that we won't need to pull the valve cover off.
The point is the engine isn't dead!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!!
And even if the valve cover comes off, it's good excuse for me to get those Evolution Motorsports headers on. So I'm pretty happy.
The moral of the story is, don't let Dan diffbreaker drive your car.

can we do a llist of all the car damage you are responsible for?
Directly and indirectly?
I'll start
1. M3 diff demolished
2. Tina magical shooting spark plug

For the time being, I have to live out my dreams of forced induction vicariously through you.

If you are going 997, you might as well go GT3 or GT2 buddy!
Very lightly used 997 GT2 sitting at main line Porsche. 175k. Be a baller Geiger!
In related news, decided not to pick up that C2S despite it being white with red leather. Chris had it exactly right, for that kind of money I should go turbo or GT3.

So wait,
that squeak squeak, was a spark plug about to fly out of the engine?!
All I know is, if I was driving it on the 1st day from Philly ~ Georgia, and that happend.
I woulda just caught a flight home :hang:, and probably cry too.

Ouch at the ejecting spark plug... Hopefully all the threads are allright!
Can't wait to see what she sounds like with the headers :D

I'm not sure if I just mistook the heat shield squeak for the new problem - the rattling spark plug, or if the squeak WAS the spark plug problem. Either way, I wouldn't have blamed you. I would have blamed Dan.

Thanks! The headers only go on if they have to go fishing in the engine for more pieces though. It's a toss up. It would be cool to get the headers on, but it would be nicer if they didn't have to crack the engine open.

I was at Princeton Porsche some time ago and really wasn't very impressed with them as a dealership... Have you tried the other dealership off US-1 by Edison? I liked that place a lot better.
24 hours for a header install is ridiculous. You could pull the motor, use a bolt extractor on all bolts, and put the motor back in in less time than that...

I loved Princeton Porsche. Great dealership. Very helpful and accomodating. Last time I went there, they had me in and out in record time.
lol. Have you ever had to deal with seized bolts?
24 hours is NOT an unusually long amount of time for that job. It has to do with the stock bolts being stuck in there. I've talked to several other porsche mechanics and owners who said the same thing. Even Evolution Motorsports, the manufacturer of the headers, was not surprized.
On my car, PT and Chris tried to get the bolts off of the stock header and the heads of the first three snapped off. It seems (also the diagnosis of Princeton and the mechanic where Tina is now) that all the bolts will have to be tapped out.
Maybe it takes less time on a pos domestic :)

Not driving a pos domestic, I wouldn't know... I'd use "pos" to describe a car in which every bolt is seized though, but that's just me  Its been a while since I worked on something old enough have fastners that had seized up, my memory may not be so good there :).
Interestingly enough though, the last car I had to deal with this on was not a domestic, but rather my first car ever, a 1999 Subaru;) Some of the bolt heads snapped off so I soaked them in PB-Blaster, drilled into the bolts, hammered an EZ-Out into them, and backed them off with the EZ-Out. It took a couple minutes, but then again I wasn't getting paid by the hour to do it, but rather needed it done in time for an autocross, so the motivation to do it quickly was different... Bolts on that car snapped at the hub, exhaust, and suspension components. Almost everything on it was modded (down to a complete engine swap) so I was always working on one thing or another.
Good luck though, all joking aside I really do hope you get those headers on :)

Sorry to disappoint, but I'm buying a newer one next year... It'll most likely have a Chevy logo since I haven't found a cheaper way to daily drive race bred 600RWHP... If you can think of one though, I'm all ears! ;)

Thanks Sam :)
we did really try to get those bolts off. It seems to be a regular problem with the older porsches. Those stock bolts just don't want to come out. I'm not arguing too much though. Leaky rear main seals are a known issue of those cars so I'm not too upset with my some of bolts being snugly in place.
What do they say? "A 911 that doesn't leak oil is out of oil"

0-60 slow but in 2nd gear acceleration from 40-70 its a fun ride at least the 9-5 Aero's

Comfortwise. Comfort is over rate for some. When I drive I am either going for a quick 5 minute run the store or I am on the highway for 6-7 hours so comfort wins in my book

Alicia, your car is quick and sounds great. Handles well on the track and is fun to drive. Glad to hear the engine isn't blown, and doesn't suck like half the people in this thread. Don't bother with the headers.

All the bolts come off with easy on my 97 vette.
We will see about the M3. I'll be putting the long tube headers on tomorrow, as well as pulling the front bumper, so I can install a new A/C condenser and drier.
She will be running straight open headers for about a week until I can get her into my friend's shop to make a new mid pipe. Fun Fun :)

Oh not the corvette, that exhaust is perfect I'll never change it!
The M3 will be getting a different set up though. The M3 wasn't too loud before, but it will be interesting to see how it changes up.
Those open headers don't even sound that bad. I drove the vette open headers for a few weeks same thing, but the vette blows huge flames out of them haha.

Ok putting long tubes on a e36 M3 sucks so many balls. The nuts came off fine, but then I had to go back and pull all the studs to allow the front header in. Right now the car is running open headers and it is so loud and annoying. I'm actually wearing my shooting hearing protection for the ride to work tomorrow.
