I guess, the M5's, Boho, 911 and my wagon are all out :(
We all average less than 1/4 of his new requirement :(

What the FUCK?
"While the 30 percent increase would be an average for both cars and light trucks, the percentage increase in cars would be much greater, rising from the current 27.5 mpg standard to 42 mpg starting in 2016. The average for light trucks would rise from 24 mpg to 26.2 mpg."
OK, so let me get this straight... If you want to drive a car, you will have to drive a tiny little underpowered tinbox weighting sub 2500 pounds which will offer you NO protection whatsoever.
If you want to drive a truck though, it just has to be one that gets 2MPG more than today's trucks.
So, in other words, a 2016 car is going to get absolutely DEVASTATED when it gets hit by a truck, but a truck made in 2016 is going to be essentially the same shit we have on the roads today, with perhaps a slightly more cleverly designed engine (Direct Injection, Variable Valve Timing, possibly FI, maybe a hybrid).
That shit pisses me off. What we need to do is have less people driving trucks and SUVs when they don't need them. No one needs to daily drive to their desk job at the office in an F250 yet that is one of the best selling vehicles in the country and that's exactly what most of the morons buying them do with them.

OH MY GOD! How DARE he value the health of the earth's environment over our desire to drive powerful cars?!!!! What an asshole.
You guys are so silly. Notice the operative word here -
"WASHINGTON - Determined to reduce new vehicle carbon emissions by 30 percent, President Barack Obama on Tuesday is announcing that automakers will have to improve car and light truck mileage by that much starting in 2016. "
You are all fine. Keep your pants on and rejoice in the fact that you'll be able to breathe clean air when you're in your 80s.
I love my emission spewing heap as much as the lot of you, but I recognize that at the end of the end, it's just a hobby.

I drove an underpowered shit box rental this Friday for 7 hours and 45 minutes straight. It got great fuel economy, but I hated driving it every second I was in it.
I'm hoping this might open up a larger market on restoring old cars, as people will not want a new car because they suck.

So what's going to happen to all the super/highend cars? Ferrari Lambo Aston etc?
There is no way they are going to hit that goal so are we just going to shut down those guys? I dunno how well this is going to work out... I wonder how this will effect inspections too. I imagine they will be stricter but will they grandfather in all the old cars or what?
I know this is just the initial wave but it should get interesting... Shit though, my MINI doesn't even get more than 25 average(22-23)

OK, looks like I didn't spell it out enough before with the red bolded underlined text...
*sigh*
It will only apply to NEW cars. It will not affect cars already produced.
They might not reach the goals, the techonology might not be developed in time, but at least it will make manufacutures try to get there, much like the Kyoto agreement. That won't happen either but look how much better things have gotten since then.
High end manufacturers will do what they do best, find a better, more sophisticated way to do it.

Umm high ends cars won't have to meet it. You will just pay an additional lux tax when you buy the car for not meeting the requirements.
If you have money you don't need to follow rules duh.
I think I might start a business restoring "pre-ban" cars.
Find E30s/E36s/M5s/M3s/190es/ Cool cars and restore them. Imagine a lot full of 1970-1990s cars all in perfect condition for sale. Price them less then a new car but offer a warranty on them.
"Sick of that 30hp econobox? Come down and test drive this brand new 1997 M3, it will wake up your commute!"

8-9 mpg here too and loving every bad carbon footprint i leave...hahaha
I believe new cars that don't meet the standards will just be slapped with a huge gas guzzler tax like they do now. So the guy buying a 140k porsche turbo won't mind paying another 5k on top to enjoy his ride. But who cares about all of this anyway? Didn't anybody inform obama that the world is ending in 2012 anyway????????????????
