Man this thing sure is making waves, for those of you who haven't seen the news. They announced that in addition to their great V6 model and the extremely potent 2.0t they are throwing in a 368hp 4.6 V8 for under 30k. It'll be interesting to see how they respond to modding with the 6 and 8 motors.
I checked it out and they are offering an "R-spec" model of the 2.0t that is lighter, Brembo brakes, 6-speed manual, Torsen LSD, 19" wheels and better suspension for 23k!(pic below) Tuners are also claiming that the little 2.0 will be able to hit almost 400hp with just bolt-ons! I couldn't find a weight for the R-spec as well but the standard 2.0t is sub 3300 and they mentioned a number of times that it is a good bit lighter.
It'll be really interesting to see how this car does but I am willing to bet this thing will be popular. I know the tuner market is exploding for it.

Its a Mitsu Evo derived engine too.
Its a great car.
I've driven one, its worth every penny.
Yeah, I love it in concept. RWD, a turbocharged motor and good brakes for around $20k, what more can you want? Hopefully the transmission holds up reasonably well, tuners are already starting to make power with both engines.

the only think I dont like is the actual look. Its halfway between tuner and super car. Given an optional lip / styling package to push it one direction or the other would be amazing.
I found my VR4 original sale paper and in 92 it cost $32,800, 300hp stock(ish) and I can do 400 with bolt ons as well. Difference being it cost $10k more than the genesis, almost 20 years ago. lol. As long as they make this thing with high reliability, its an amazing value

I don't see how it has any supercar styling cues at all.
I think it is a sweet little car, I would just feel funny driving a Hyundai. V8 option should be cool, too. Expect to see a ton of these in drift events.
^ Word, with inflation, even that $30k back in 1990 is $50k now. The Genesis Coupe is a great deal. I'm also kind of lukewarm on the styling, but lowered with properly-fitting wheels they look good enough.

de-badged grill, lip kit and replace those huge foglight inserts with some hardcore looking brake ducts and that would fix the front end. The rear is actually pretty interesting looking with dual exhaust though the tips look almost as bad as the IS-F's staggered quad tip.
I was looking to see if there were any lip kits for it and came across an emblem people are using to replace the hyundai badge with. It's actually a pretty cool looking Aston-esq wing setup from... what would you call Korea, the uncle-land?:p I think that the Hyundai barrier will be a big one to get across, but it's definitely a solid looking car.

Still looks like a girlie car!
The V8 will prolly be like 29,999 base form, which they won't make any of.
The loaded out V6 autos cost 30k+
It is the same as an Evo block but weaker. The black will fail if you do forged internals.
But it should still be a cheap fun car.

Well they just issued a 1million car recall. For 3 different items.
Good luck with thier reputation. Deja Vu all over again for this company.

link?
All I could find was a recall for 50k cars on a light switch problem that they are fixing. Hilariously right below that story is a link to GM's 1.5million car recall because the engines explode and catch fire(Link (http://www.autospies.com/news/Yet-Again-GM-has-another-Recall-This-time-1-5-Million-Cars-42990/))

On a serious note..I think it could be a fun car / good value but like other have said, I don't know if I could get past the fact that it's a Hyundai. I'm having a hard enough time with a Mitsubishi :D

Since the Evo x and the Genesis 2.0t share the same 2.0lt engine block. Someone can ask about how different are the internals of each engine. 290 HP and 210 seems to be a bit of a diference and can let people to think about the genesis internals strenght.

sigh...car snobs
anywho, its a first gen. just about every first gen has a fair amount of issues that get worked out easy once the second gens roll out
and if it is only for a light switch,id take that over major issues like exploding engines and such anyday

well said, those modded pics are fuckin hot! I'm going to check one out tomorrow in 6speed so I'll let you guys know how it drives and feels. Buschur racing just recently picked one up to play around with so you know these things will be putting down some serious power.
Side note: all the cars are named after racetracks! The grey I'm test driving is called Nordschleife Grey.

Ummmm
For starters, the block is evidently sourced from the Mitsubishi Ralliart, which is different from the more structurally sound EVO X block. Most expect the engine's sturdy components and 86mm stroke and bore to make 400 wheel-horsepower and rev to 8,000 RPM with the proper mods and a stock block. While the 2.0T gives modders plenty of room for overclocking, the engine's open deck block means that too much boost could warp the cylinders. Block guards can be used to reinforce the cylinder walls, but that means additional work and cash to really kick the 2.0T into high gear.
Me and mike saw two of these all camouflaged up on last years rally, sitting in a parking lot with a bunch of asian dudes standing around them and a bunch of other hyundais. I forget which stop...maybe colorado?
Its a cool car, but I really take issue with their "design"...same with kia. They just cop all the good parts of other cars and put them into theirs. Innovate a little, fuck.

I don't care how good it is or how cheap it is, I dislike the styling, and I will never own a Hyundai (unless it's on a full sponsorship package from them).

I too think its ugly. I'm all about bang for your buck, but they should have made it look more like the Tiburon, which was actually a fine looking car an would have been a great bargain if it wasn't wrong wheel drive...
The price falls too close to a Mustang, and while I wouldn't buy a Mustang myself, faced with buying this or a Ford, I'd get the Ford...

I'd hit that.
There was a green one at the Sonic Meet a couple weeks back, doesn't look half bad.

Im a fan of tiburons but i completely disagree-the genesis has a way better front end. the tibby's front end is too curved and generic-the genesis looks mean as hell with thos slanted headlights and the lower grill curving down in the middle
