Hey Guys.....I NEED your help.....I dont have anywhere near half the mechanical know how of you guys and need your advice.....seems like a good deal to me...but please weigh in....
I would be buying the car in addition to the CTT, and use it for around town, short trips ....and to just turn the boost up and play with....in order to divert some abuse away from the CTT. 2002 VW 337 GTI(mods) ...17,000 miles and he wants 17K. I get the stock front seat/rear seats and bunch of random stock parts....intake..seatbelts...rear shelf...and a few more randoms....
So far i have been told that...to run at high boost it will need a stage 2 + clutch and LSD .....also that the ATP exhaust manifolds have been known to crack at high temps....

Here is the thread on 6speed with full pics

The car for sale is a 2002 Volkswagen GTI 337. The 337 was a special
edition model brought to the US to commemorate 25 years of the Golf
GTI. Only 1500 units were brought to the US so this vehicle is
extremely rare.
This in one of the lowest mileage 337’s in the country with only ~17K
miles. I can assure you that this is one of the most meticulously
cared for cars for sale anywhere. Owned by the son of a 35+ year PCA
member and avid auto enthusiast. This car was never even breathed on
wrong. Always stored, covered, in a heated garage. Never seen any
snow and only been on a wet road ONCE. I cared for this car as if it
were my own child. It received weekly microfiber washes and was
detailed monthly by me (I own a detailing outfit) using only the best
products from Griots Garage, Detailers Paradise, etc. This car looks
better than the day it was born.

More than $15K has been spent on this car making it the monster that
it is today. A list of modifications to follow.

Exterior –
I believe this car was perfect the way it rolled off the production
floor, so no external modifications have been done to alter the cars
appearance, except for tint, lowering, and debadging.

Interior –
- Recaro sport seats with airbags (see pictures).
- The stereo has been removed and replaced with a small (1/2 din)
equalizer that is connected to an MTX amp. This was done in the
interest of weight savings. There is a built in jack for an IPOD, but
no CD/radio, etc. Speakers have been replaced by all MB Quartz
components. The sound is fantastic and the setup is very simple and
user friendly.
- In the open DIN slot are 3 VDO gauges. Boost, oil temp, and voltmeter.
- The backseats have also been removed for weight savings, but will
come with the car and can be re-installed without issue.
There is absolutely no visible evidence that this car has ever even
been sat in. This interior is absolutely perfect.

Suspension –
- KW Variant 3 coilovers. As most of you know, this is the cream of
the crop as far as coilovers go.
- Neuspeed 28mm RSB.

Brakes –
- Porsche 993TT “big reds.” 322mm two piece rotors with custom
aluminum hats.
- Rear is equipped with 12.1 in. lightweight two-piece floating rotors.
Weighing in at well under 3000 lbs., this car stops on a dime.

Engine –
- This car has a 1.8L turbocharged four cylinder. Originally rated at
180 hp, it now has nearly double that thanks to a Garrett GT2871R
turbo and REVO fully custom big turbo software. With a massive 3-inch
intake pipe, ATP exhaust manifold, and 3-inch unrestricted downpipe
(no cats) it can really breath. The car is equipped with a ModShack
TT pneumatic boost controller, which allows for the manual control of
both max boost and onset. You can run her all day long at 5 psi and
get in the neighborhood of 180 hp. Crank her up to 10 psi for a nice,
smooth 200+ or get ready to outrun those unsuspecting sports cars at
22 psi, which is good for around 320 hp on 91-octane fuel. Although I
never did it, if you want to get crazy and go above 22 psi, the turbo
is capable of well over 350 hp. The software is fully adjustable via
a SPS controller and the OBDII port. With the controller timing and
boost can be set as well as valet mode and anti-theft. 480 cc
injectors and a Walbro inline auxiliary fuel pump feed the beast.
- A N/X nitrous mister is installed for cooling the massive Eurojet
air-air intercooler.
- Past the downpipe is a resonated, muffled Miltek system that gives
the car a very subtle rumble, but it is virtually silent while cruising.
The car only has appx. 500 miles with the upgraded turbo and has been
very reliable.

There is a lot more to mention, but I will leave the rest to your
specific questions. The only imperfections of the car are a few,
expected rock chips on the front bumper (not noticeable from >1 foot
away, a small chip on the passenger side fender (also not noticeable
from >1 foot away. Other than that, the paint is flawless and amazing.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!!!!

I had a very similar setup in my 20th(same thing only 03) they are a ton of fun and its a decent deal. When my insurance company totalled mine out they gave me 21 and I had about 35k on it.

The trans they used in it is an 02M which is a beefy 6speed that can handle the power no problem. The manifold he used on there is garbage, it caused me so many problems on the 05 rally(broke the studs and the turbo almost fell off) so I would keep an eye out on that. PT has a good relationship with a few VW shops that can take care of that aspect for you.

Other then that and the fact that the seat looks horrible you should be set!

I have a set of leather and alcantara recaro sportlines that would look awesome in there if you are interested too;) let me know.(they should bolt right onto your stock recaro brackets)

Thanks Guys!!

So I wont be driving the car everyday...and it could definatly end up sitting around for a week or so....while Im away with the Cayenne...so she wont be gettin beat up consistently ....but i am concerned about the exhaust manifolds nonetheless....are there any alternatives to the ATP?? Def...interested in your seats....if i get the car...will be calling soon!! oh yea...and happy birthday Dan!!!

I know PT is the in-haus VW expert ...and im hoping he takes a look at this!! especially b/c we live close to each other and he knows all the shops to hit up!! so let me know what you think PT!!

Im hoping to get the guy down to 16K...as i would have to fly out there and figure out a way to get the car home/ rent a car to get to his house and whatnot.......

Also I have never bought a used car before off of a private person before.....are there any good rules to follow....should i make up some sort of contract for him to sign...( IE ..catastrophic engine failure due to mods within 2 weeks is on him??) any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!! help the nooooob!!!

It's just like a non-modded car, have a shop that knows about modded vw's check it out and do a pre purchase inspection. If you really want to have fun with it you are going to need an LSD(1300ish installed for a quaife).

As far as a contract for him it would be hard to do but if the shop checks compression and leakdown, as long as you don't do something bad you should be in the clear. Make sure all the hoses are tight and such, I unfortunately know my way around that engine very well.

I hadn't heard anything about the manifold cracking, but the studs they come with are garbage. You can pull it apart or pay someone too and use ARP studs with some kind of locking washer to hold the nut on and you should be fine, any other manifold will reposition the turbo and you will need new charge pipes/downpipe. though APR's stage III and IV use an inconel(sp) manifold that you may be able to purchase from them directly.

ok, the car is awesome. i was going to go with a 337 but bought a jetta instead, i know i am a fucking idiot. all those parts kind of takes all the value out of it now since it is a 337 and a special edition vw. the car would be worth more with it being in stock form. the turbo kit is ok, dan had it on his gti and it had problems with the turbo falling off. I say do it if you arn't going to daily drive it and if you ever need to get rid of some of the aftermarket parts, i am here. also since you are local, i can give you all the shops that will fix it if anything ever goes wrong.

Ok.....Thanks guys!!

I think im going to do it....Its really clean and im getting pretty good feedback from everyone I have been asking about it...except for the price.

He dropped it to 17K....
But...if I have to spend the money to fly to iowa, get it checked out, rent a car....etc I wont pay more then 16k.....
If he wants to deliver it to PA.....i could stand 17....

Ideally I want to pay as little as possible...any tips on specific issues involved with his set up...that i can use as leverage....??

Again I appreciate all the help and will definatly need the hookup with the local shops in PA.....
