Sony CD players have a tendency to skip a lot and their CD player read heads go bad after a certain amount of time. Also the sound that they put out isn't that great compared to other CD players out there. They just aren't good source units. I can't say anything about the 2004 model line but the older model line had these problems all the time.
If I were you I would buy Alpine or Pioneer. I have used Alpine for years now and have never had any troubles with any of their source units. Also, I would try to find a deck elsewhere. You can buy CD Players off the net or ebay for so much cheaper than at Best Buy or Circuit City. Take a look at www. alpine-usa.com and look through their decks. I just bought the CDA-9833 and it is amazing.
Good Luck!!!!

I've had great luck with the kenwood excelon serious with the motorized flip face. Had a great one, then some low life busted into my truck and ripped it out and Insurance replaced it with a newer version. Worked like a champ till the day i sold my truck. Sony tends to be lesser quality than the rest. Return it and get either kenwood, or prolly an alpine dude.

i was reading reviews on the alpines and alot of thier models people complain that that the Display is very hard to read since its low lit. I dont know i wanna pick one out tommorrow but i see what your guys saying about the sony so i tossed that out of the hat....... the alpines seem nice but people say the displays are low lit and the model MP has people saying it sounds good but has no EQ......

Sony Explode sucks. I had one in my car and some one stole it, at the time the screen didnt work, the vol was sparratic, crappy reception. I have Alpine in all my cars and my mom's two Jags have Alpine. Never had a problem with them, the one in my WRX has a sound enhancing mode wich is awosme.

I am running Alpine in both of my vehicles. The Alpine CVA series in my SUV and the normal face out in the weekend "ride". Alpine and Pioneer are both considered to be very reliable units and in the automotive area so you should be safe choosing either one. The rest comes down to you. What are you looking for in a headunit? Cost? Style? Features? This is going to be the final factor in deciding what you are going to be looking for.
Hope this helps.

Yep, perfectly normal. In fact, my Pioneer headunit actually has a COOLING FAN in the back of the unit to try and keep temps down . . .

I own an auto customizing shop, too many problems with Sony, you open them up and every part but the faceplate is made by the cheapest supplier, Pioneer is the best bang for the buck, Alpine is good also.

Not really.. j/k Seriously, though, I would just take it to a stereo shop, have them take a look at the wiring... The only instances I have come across this issue have been ground related.
