The 240z and Austin Healey 3000 are what originally got me interested in cars and I've considered one for a long time. Formerly a california car, sold to a man in Hamburg. Spent 4 months in Hamburg driven by a young girl (guy's daughter) who blew the transmission out. It was then sold to the PO who bought it with the intention of making a pro street drag car. It sat in his yard and he never worked on it though for the past 7 years. It was put away running so I'm gonna see if I can get the stock engine running to atleast tool around with it until I can put the swap together I want to do. I'm HOPING to do Paint/Interior/Suspension this winter and drive it on the stock engine with a new trans in the spring. We'll see. Overall the chassis is very clean, front frame rails are solid, inner fender wells and 1/4 panels and rockers are solid. Roof has a bit of surface rust, it needs a hatch, and like all 240's the floorboards under the pedals appear to be trash (thankfully they make weld in replacements that are of thicker steel). Anyway, yeah, I finally have gone down the Japanese car path, I knew it was going to happen sooner or later, just didnt really expect it now. I blame driving/drifting 350z all year, and then going out with the S1DC guys and Bing at Dunnville.
More pics tomorrow and this weekend. :)

That thing is rad! I don't think SR swaps are too difficult in that car. That would make for a crazy drift car!
:D
I love the color!

Andy, that's kinda the plan ;) I really wanted to go with a VQ swap but the bolt in kit for an SR is $350 and there is one already in my garage, so I may have to go that route. Should know more this weekend.

Some new pics from today, unloaded it from the trailer, started looking at things to see what's there, what's rusty, and what not.

http://www.mturck.com/240z/DSCF2844.jpg
So I climbed under the car while pulling it off the trailer and to my pleasant surprise the frame rails are in good shape, not rusted at all just a couple dents from improper jackstand placement. The floors seem to be almost entirely intact from below might just be a bit "soft" gonna see when I pull the carpet out. Strut towers (front and rear are perfect, rockers are perfect from the side and below. Overall an incredible buy, I'm EXTREMELY happy. Can't wait to start working on it, will probably pull the spare parts out of the interior and start pulling seats/carpet today or tomorrow.

Just drop an LS motor in it. With the release of the LS3 the prices of the LS1/2/6 have gone south.

Made two disappointing discoveries today...
#1 The car was originally bright orange and was repainted red (UHHG, had it been orange I would've just left it)
#2 I found a few rot holes in the floorboards, was kinda expected, and I'm not upset considering the deal I got, but I was holding out a small sliver of hope that the entire chassis was rot free.
Pics!
http://www.mturck.com/240z/DSCF2846.jpg
Some of the stuff that came with the car, the blown trans, and the center piece of the lip spoiler that needs to be repaired. Some idiot decided to just chunk away a section rather than shaving the push button for the hatch lid. Uhhg.

Found this in the spare tire well with the other transmission parts, yep, she definitely spanked the trans.
http://www.mturck.com/240z/DSCF2875.jpg
That's all for today, tonight I'll pull the undercoating off the floorboards inside and figure out the extent of the rust, it doesnt appear to be to bad. I think I mayyyy drive it around this year with the new drivetrain/suspension and the faded paint. But that's just a possibility.
http://www.mturck.com/240z/DSCF2879.jpg
Engine is ready to come out, gonna pull that tomorrow night, all I need to do is disconnect the exhaust. Oddly the car still had very clean coolant in it.
Ordered new floor pans we'll weld in.

Got to work on it a bit more today, some pics.
http://www.mturck.com/240z/DSCF2942.jpg
Bee's nests in the door jamb.
The overall goal today was to get the dash out, start to access the quality (or lack thereof as I'd later find out) of the wiring that was still in the car, and play with gauges. Started by pulling the dash out which unfortunately ended with me and a pair of diagonal cutters going to town due to some idiots in the past installing some sort of aftermarket alarm and stereo equipment. Wires EVERYWHERE, needless to say, I wasnt pleased. Wiring harness seems to be mainly intake though and I'll likely rewire sections of it rather than go for full replacement, meanwhile the gauges and engine management will be on their own harness separate from the rest of the electronics.

Man, I have having parts of the front of the dash bolted/screwed down, makes everything a total pain, this is where the german's know what they are doing with mounting the dashes on pinch welds and having very few pieces of hardware holding them in.

Something I've been struggling with for weeks, the car has ANCIENT wheel locks on it, and I have no key. I think I'm going to end up welding nuts onto them and taking them off that way, but I figured I'd post an image and see if anyone knew what it was, or had a better idea.

No gold leaf on this car, it's not baller enough.
Thanks guys :)
Small update for today, took some time mounting the passanger's front carbon ZG flare. Now that I've done it once I know I can do the other side a lot quicker, but that's fairly standard with this sort of thing. ;) Also ground off a bunch more brackets in the engine bay, almost have it all smoothed out to the point where the concentration will be paint removal and repainting.
http://www.mturck.com/240z/DSCF3108.jpg
Drilled and marked, I had previously drilled out the ZG flare and then held the flare up while Andy (300zx) and Joe (91MR2) marked the holes for me. Thanks guys!

My car is at work, that's not my garage. Though the garage at the house I currently live at does have a lift ;) We dont do bodywork or wheel work for customers, just stuff we do on our own cars. We do performance parts (purchasing and install) and tuning, and occasional bits of service for a few of our Subaru customers. I'd suggest looking for somewhere local to do your wheels. I'm about to buy an oven to do mine so they wont chip.
Next up, I need a tire machine, I miss having access to one.

http://www.mturck.com/240z/DSCF3223.jpg
Starting to clean up, paint scraper and steel wool. I also discovered a small hole in the frame rail which you can see in the bottom right of that photo. It's about an inch and a half long, by maybe 1/3 of an inch wide. Wont be a hard repair at all.
http://www.mturck.com/240z/DSCF3225.jpg
http://www.mturck.com/240z/DSCF3228.jpg
Progress coming along, I'd say I have the bay 60% stripped. I still have a lot of little holes that were drilled to fill and spot welds for old brackets to drill out. A significant amount of paint has been removed though. Currently my big debate is if I should remove the stock battery tray or not since the battery is being moved to one of the rear cubby holes.

not much in terms of visual progress.
Spent a ton of time drilling out every bracket on the firewall, frame rails, and remaining bits of the engine bay. Ground most of them down flat, removed the battery tray, finish chemically stripping the engine bay, etc. I now need to go back over the engine bay with a wire wheel to get the remaining crap. The rubber steering bushing is being sent out to have an aluminum version made, the old one was quite hard and brittle. Basically need to go back and weld up all the holes and divots from drilling the brackets off, and tack in the crossmember with the engine test fit. That's my scatterbrained order of things right now. Hopefully I'll have everything collected to be welded this week and I can get that tacked in with Christian's help and it can go over to PMP to have the finish work on the welds done.
One photo for today with the engine bay mostly torn down.

wow that sheet metal is beefy enough to support the seat? or is there some kind of bracing I'm not seeing
MPD47
02-06-2008, 04:09 PM
No Dan, there is a frame rail that goes there which I am replacing with a beefier part that will run the full length of the unibody. I'm using a thicker material for the floors and the rails, adding a large under chassis X brace that we're building, and connecting the new frame rails to the rear subframe, which they didnt do stock.

Knocked out a few hours on the car tonight, there is about 25 pounds of metal/rust and sound deadening under the car. Spent a ton of time with a mask, gloves, scraper and propane torch working on removing the interior tar, but I had to use a heat gun in some slightly tighter/more sensitive areas for safety's sake. (I know, me using caution, hard to believe.)

http://www.mturck.com/240z/DSCF6210.jpg
Some floor rust on the driver's side which has separated the floor from the rear frame rail extension. I've gone under and looked above and the frame rail extension under the floor board is in mint shape despite the passenger's side one being all banged up (not that it matters as I'm putting bad dog replacement/subframe connectors in).

Trimming away more of that fat.... err rust and sound deadening. That's about 2/3's of what I removed today. Weighs somewhere around 25lbs.
http://www.mturck.com/240z/DSCF6232.jpg
Where I left it tonight, back was killing me from being hunched inside the car for a few hours. Trimmed the passenger's side all the way down, no more rust over there. The driver's side under floorboard support was in great shape, so it stayed (though slightly cut off at the rearward section. I also left the seat support in, although it wont be there I needed a bit of structure left in the car for moving it. I have a bit more to do on the driver's side and the entire firewall and inner rockers needs to be stripped still. I have the trans tunnel mostly done though it still needs a chemical bath.
And I'm just in taking a break for lunch right now. Working on sanding the entire cabin down to bare metal.

Probably ;)
Spent most of the day in the garage, lots of progress however it doesn't look like it, heh. Most of the firewall and trans tunnel have been taken down to bare metal (or close to it) with sand paper or a wire wheel. All of the insulation is gone. Most of the areas that will need to be clean for welding the floors in have been prepped as well. I've got a few more hours to spend on it, especially behind the pedals but it's coming along nicely.

Worked on the spare tire area and hatch are a bunch. Cleaned up some rust and removed a few bits of destroyed sound proofing. Primed the well and then used rubberized undercoating on it. It had a bit of rot just in the 1/4" or so around the drain grommet. Sorry I forgot to take in progress pics, it's still drying in the last photo.
Also rolled the car up onto my scales, weights as follows:
LF: 271 RF: 271
LR: 404 RR: 392
Total: 1338
F/R: 40.5%/59.5%
This is with no engine, no floors, no transmission, no driveshaft, no interior, w/fuel tank, full suspension, steering, brakes, metal rear bumper, all lights, ZG Flares, IMSA 3 Piece wing, full glass, all metal bodywork. I believe my shell is extremely clean and contains no bondo except for on the hatch (if you care about how much bondo weighs)

Nah, another Nissan motor. I put a deposit on something new, but dont want to say what it is until it's in my possession.
Nice! Always loved the 240Zs... incidentally, one of the first times I talked to Nick (some 10 years ago) was about 240Zs and how I wanted to buy one and drop a V8 in it. It was our first "car talk"... haha!
Out of curiosity, how do you treat the bare metal to prevent it from rusting? Or do you just let a little bit of rust build up and then shave it down again just before painting?

Som, it's not going to be bare for more than a couple weeks, which honestly isn't long enough for it to accumulate any real rust (surface or otherwise). Any areas I was concerned about I tossed a bit of primer on. I'll have to hit it with a wire wheel to re-clean most of the stuff for welding anyway.
