I currently do not have any radar detecting device what so ever. I used to have an old passport but my sister stole that from me and I let her keep it. Whats the new and best on the market?
Best bang for the buck?

I personally love my Valentine One. It is by no means a cheap purchase. I love the arrows that offer you a heads up as to the location of the LEO. I'm pretty impressed by the range as well. I've picked up some signals from about 1.25 miles away (granted it was a straight highway, but still!).

Pff. I've got one built in my brain! It's my sixth sense, cop-detecting.

I have had an Escort Passport 8500 and I have the Valentine V1 right now.
The V1 is nice but the Escort had a lot less false alerts... The V1 gives me so many I have ignored it before even though it was a real alert.
If I was on the market for one right now I would probably consider the new Escort 9500 with GPS, because I use it around town and thus have to put up with a lot of false alerts

To be honest with you, I do think the V1 is a lot more sensitive. But I always leave it on "All" and frankly I'm to the point where I don't consciously hear it unless it fits the pattern of a cop (slow, steady increase in strength). Kind of funny actually. Passengers will complain about it being too loud and I won't even have remembered hearing it. Guess you just learn to block it out.

As for radar detection abilities the best is the Escort 9500ci, $1,600.(Escort's newest concealed radar detector, with poor performing laser jammers) or BEL STi-R $1,100 (concealed detector uses same radar reciever as the 9500ci but lacks some of the features of the escort and no shifters). The V1 is second best detection ability at $400...Yes that is right Escort have finally produced a radar detector with better detection than the V1...
What alot of the hardcore radar detector users set-up of choice currently is the Escort 9500ci (radar reciever mounted in grill) along with the V1 in cabin (mounted high), and inaddittion with the Zr4 shifter heads they would add a Laser Interceptor quad (2 head front and back.
I personally use a V1 in my car along with a Laser Interceptor quad, and have had great luck.

Having never driven cross country with you, your opinion doesn't carry a lot of weight in my book.

Thats fine, I know I am at a huge disadvantage because of that.
All that I know I have learned through personal testing of different set-ups either radar detectors and/or laser jammers and observation(of the Guys Of Lidar testing events). Also this is my hobby, some guys have fishing, or racing, I have police counter measures. While I no longer have any police radar guns to do radar detector tests I still have my laser gun to test out laser jammers if anyone in the north east region wants to test out a jammer set-up. I travel all over from south NJ around Atlantic city, to central upstate, NY.

Yeah I am still there(link (http://www.radardetector.net/forums/)) under the username 'crazyVOLVOrob'. The information available there is intense. And if you want to se some sick custom installs there are some very stealth and clean.
