Days after a couple's marital problems led to the deaths of three people, residents of the community are trying to make sense of what happened.
"It's just a tragedy," said Margaret Waite, a neighbor of John and Kelli Alexander. "Everybody is just stunned. We're all in shock."
Frontenac Mayor Saundra "Sandy" Sobelman said, "Kelli was up here (at City Hall) with the kids a few weeks ago selling Girl Scout cookies."
John Alexander gunned down his estranged wife, Kelli, and a family friend, April Wheeler of St. Charles, Feb. 25 in Town and Country. The Alexanders' three children, ages 8, 6 and 5, witnessed the shootings.
John Alexander used his vehicle to force his wife to stop hers on Bopp Road, where the shootings occurred.
John Alexander died later that evening after crashing his SUV at Highway 40 (Interstate 64) and Lindbergh Boulevard.
The Alexanders lived in Frontenac and also owned a second home in West County.
Sobelman said the Alexanders were involved in local politics, and her conversations with them were often based on politics and the community.
In a 2004 article in the West County Journal, Alexander talked about the city in which he grew up. He said Frontenac is "the safest place to raise children."
"If I can't find my kids," he said, "they're next door eating Mrs. Waite's freshly baked cookies or looking at a hawk through Mr. Waite's binoculars."
Margaret Waite said, "My husband would be working in the yard, and the children would sometimes come over. If I had cookies, I certainly gave them cookies."
The Waites found out about the shootings after a friend told them to turn on the television. Since then she has spoken to a few people about the tragedy.
"It's been such a difficult time. You feel so bad about the whole situation and for the children. You wonder how it will affect the rest of their lives. It's so sad," she said.
The Alexanders' Frontenac home is in the Ladue School District. The district had extra counselors available Monday at some schools.

Agreed. Plus I think cookies will be extremely important in the children's recovery. But we may need to look to why the mother did not bake cookies more often. This might have been a contributing factor to their deaths.

I think that my dad should bring his on the 05. It would keep up with a few vehicles. He also wants some "simple" 20-22" wheels and a Borla exhaust for next summer. It is so funny because he is 60. I have a cool dad.
