View Full Version : 3M Carbon Fiber wrap

So, i've been doing some research. I found 3M's version of the DRY carbon. Instead of a fabric, this is a film with a dry carbon style weave pressed onto the adhesive backing. It is NOT like the carbon fiber vinyl with the gloss. This will actually go from gray/black to black/gray as you rotate it, showing each weave is true and not a picture printed on white vinyl and cleared.

A few notes firstly:

A) This will not make your car lighter, it's purely aesthetic
B) This is a very similar material to the type used n the interior of the new M3s
C) The comply adhesive on the backing is so easy a caveman could use it. There are slices in the adhesive to allow for air to channel out, making it nearly impossible to get bubbles unless you try really hard.

There are a few different manufacturers that make this, but 3M's is by far the best. I have a few pictures of it wrapping around spoilers and such, showing its versatility.

My original idea was to cap my roof, like this:

I ended up doing my interior trim pieces first

heres a nice photo of the texture:

It could EASILY be installed on the roof, spoiler, arches, fenders, cowl area... you name it.
Here are some photos of it on a spoler:

I know some people(Durka) will absolutely hate the thought of putting this anywhere near their car. You should all understand that this makes for some great accents, little pieces that would be cost prohibitive or aren't even available in carbon fiber.I recently found out that Eurodyne, a BMW aftermarket company is selling this stuff for $65 a square foot. My cost is significantly less but only for you AKA people;)

Shoot me a PM or email and I'll answer any questions you have, or call if you have my #

Looks cool for interior trim. I'm gonna give it a shot on my m5 stuff in the next few days.

So a friend who went in on a bunch of the material with me initially did his suby and then one of his friend's Miata. Here is the aftermath:

About midway through the day his friend showed up in his 2 hour old miata, The rear piece was rhinolined with some crap. They sanded what hadn't chipped off and applied the wrap there:

That's it Durka, I'm gonna sic Vin Diesel on you!

Honestly, I don't care if you guys don't like the material. Lets face it Durka, you haven't liked anything I've done in the past year or so. Not everyone has access to real carbon fiber(I do but that's another story, I just have no idea what to do with it!)

hmm....that looks like it conforms much more easily than I expected it to.

I wouldn't put it on the exterior either, but it might come in handy covering up some of those hideous BMW interior pieces.
Dan (Diffbreaker) we should definitely experiment with a tiny piece on yours.

There are a couple interior peices on the GTI that are scratched up, I would be willing to try it on those.....

I will bring it on wednesday

That's stupid! I think it would look really good wrapped.

MPD47
08-18-2009, 12:42 PM
Katie, Alicia's stuff is a thin like .012 2x2 weave, it's good cosmetic stuff that's fairly thin. It doesn't actually have any structure to it like the stuff you see used for trunks and hoods and what. Those are usually backed up fiberglass or a honeycomb aluminum (or sometime carbon) core. Which is why you can wrap them in vinyl or use them as body panels. Part of the reason Alicia's carbon is peeling up is because of how thin it is combined with long exposure to the sun. She really just needs to get a few of the OEM Dash pieces from PNMA or Sunset (15% discount on Porsche parts is usually the norm from them) and replace the ones she has so they match.

diablesse
08-18-2009, 12:48 PM
Actually Durka, it's not that thin. The reason it cracked is becuase the thermal expansion rates of the clear acrylic coat and the carbon fibre are different. When the pieces get exposure the the sun, one piece expands faster than the other, causing it to wrap and hence, crack on the surface.

And Katie, no. It make no sense at all to wrap cracked pieces.

MPD47
08-18-2009, 01:14 PM
I put a zero in the wrong place, I meant 0.12 The carbon itself is fairly thin.

So I am getting the hummer wrapped in matte vinyl (white or black) in the coming weeks. I wonder how ridiculous the hummer would look with this stuff?
It might add some contrast if I did matte white.

Before anyone else says it, a $1600 wrap over a completely fucked paint job is much better than $7-10k to repaint the entire truck.

How can I get my hands on some of that stuff?
Want to wrap interior wood trim (hehe I said trim) definately make the car faster in the corners.
